Borrell expands manufacturing in California

BORRELL has begun setting up a dedicated manufacturing and assembly cell in Merced for its AI-powered CX optical sorters

BORRELL USA continues to expand its manufacturing capabilities in California as part of the company’s long-term strategy to increase its industrial footprint in the United States.

Following the delivery of the first machines manufactured entirely in the U.S. for integration into an almond blanching line, BORRELL has already started a new phase of its California manufacturing expansion: the creation of a dedicated manufacturing and assembly cell in Merced for the CX range of AI-powered optical sorters.

Since May, BORRELL USA has also been carrying out an important part of the Borrell SmartSorter® development and commissioning process at its Merced facility. This work includes collecting and processing millions of images of almonds and pistachios to classify products, identify defects and train the artificial intelligence models used by BORRELL sorting systems.

With the new manufacturing cell now being deployed, more of the physical production, assembly, testing and commissioning of these machines is also being brought to California, combining manufacturing, AI training, validation and technical service under the same roof.

The objective is to manufacture increasingly advanced machines in the heart of California’s Central Valley while making them more competitive in price, performance, delivery times and after-sales support for North American customers.

The CX family is the first major optical sorting platform included in this expansion. BORRELL also plans to progressively extend its U.S. manufacturing capabilities to the XMX range and to other new technologies currently under development and experimental testing.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to strengthen BORRELL USA’s industrial and technological base in California. The Merced facility is progressively evolving into a complete operation integrating manufacturing, machining, electronics, software, artificial intelligence, product testing and customer support.
